For our family with 3 young boys, I can’t imagine a destination that didn’t include adventure. Our last destination began with adventure before even getting there. I say that because our travel arrangements were my husband as pilot and me as co-pilot of a single engine prop plane.
We’ve done many trips before, but this was our first over big blue Atlantic waters. We were heading from Orlando to Abaco, Bahamas. Heading south from Orlando we were bumping around in the sky due to clouds and I was feeling like this was alot work for something that was an easy trip by a major airliner.
That all changed for me when the sand and scrub below changed to blue waters only obstructed by white highrise beachfront condominiums. Marinas and moorings speckled the interior waters below.
In just a few minutes we were all alone over the Atlantic. The clouds were clearing and the water below was bare except for seagoing waves crashing in solitude. It was just us and the waves.
We were heading east and needed to pass over Grand Bahamas Island and continue to the out island of Abaco. This is a large island with a suprising amount of undeveloped areas and it became apparent why this island was named “grand” as we traveled along the edge of the island towards our destination.
Shortly after losing view of Grand Bahamas we were approaching Marsh Harbor, Abaco. Like many smaller aiports, there is no control tower and likewise no one instructing pilots on flight patterns; however, this is a very busy airport and use of the runway here is very interesting if not strenous.
We did land without incident and headed through customs. Then we were into a very expensive taxi to the ferry dock. The ferry would take us to Guana Cay. It was quite a distance by ferry and probabaly about 45 mins en route. But it was beautiful. By then the wind had picked up and it was starting to get dark. There on the back of the ferry a big wave splashed over the boat and I had my first taste of the Sea of Abaco, delicious, and salty.
Once in Guana Cay, the property’s caretaker met us at the dock and drove us to the house “Baharini”. Of course, she was kind enough to stop at the golf cart rental so we could get our means of transportation. In the dark we made it to the house with her help and made ourselves comfortable for the night.
The next morning was clear and sunny. The sun was pushing through the blinds at the head of our bed. I was curious about our final location
