Guide to visiting Orlando, Florida with young kids

You have young children, and you are visiting the Orlando area. So, what else is new? After all, if you want to keep your sanity, you pretty much have to bring the gang to Disney World as least a couple times. Still, there are other things to do in the area.

First off, there is the accommodation. Bringing a family to the area can be quite pricey. So, look for hotels away from the theme parks. There are a whole host of them along I-4, Colonial Drive, Lee Road, John Young Parkway, and other roads. If you’re driving into the area, pick up a discount coupon magazine at a Perkin’s, IHOP or other restaurant. A lot of these places have good deals for families, and many have shuttles to the parks.

In terms of fun for the little ones, there’s plenty to choose from. Disney has several play areas specifically for the small ones. SeaWorld has Shamu’s Happy Harbor; a wonderful places for the kids to run and play. For little kids, this is a wonderful place; you’ll have trouble pulling them away from it.

Along those same lines, Universal Studios has the Curious George Goes to Town, A Day in the Park with Barney, Fievel’s Playland and the Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster. Not only can the children run and play, but the areas are separated by age. So, the toddlers can play in the sand while the older kids run around and cause mayhem without anyone worrying that they will knock over the little ones. And, there are plenty of benches in the shade for mom and dad! Check them out at www.universalorlando.com.

If you tired of the parks, downtown Orlando has several old-fashion parks that the kids will just love to play in. The one next to Lake Eola has all the classic swings and slides, and is well secured for the protection of the kids. You’ll soon find perhaps to the amazement of the children themselves that kids are kids the world over and nothing really changes. They don’t need computers and consoles to keep them happy. Orlando also has several miniature golf courses, if you want something a bit more low-key. Then, down on International Drive is The Fun Spot. Its website, www.fun-spot.com, has all the details on location, rides, times and prices. For as little as $15 each, kids aged from two to six can enjoy the rides and arcade all day.

So, it’s easy to find fun things for the young ones to do while in Orlando. In fact, there’s enough to entice you back again and again.
